Addison Hines (1928-2003) was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, the second child of Addison Hines Sr. , an electrical engineer, and Pauline Powell Hines. His high school yearbook showed he was nicknamed “Stonewall” and planned to be a professional photographer, and indeed, he worked at the local Photo Mart right out of school. In Chester, Hines built a chain of photography stores, and became a major importer of photography equipment and a successful real estate investor. In the early 1980s, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and shortly after to Palm Beach, while maintaining homes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in Maryland.
Hines’ success allowed him to generously support his passions in life and to create a charitable trust that continues to do so in the arts, especially music and photography. At the American Cancer Society of Palm Beach, he was especially active as a long-time board member and treasurer. Known for his rapier wit and infectious sense of humor, Hines was an enthusiastic music lover and chaired the Guild for International Piano Competition at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. He was also active in many other Palm Beach social and philanthropic organizations, including The Society of the Four Arts, Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, American Red Cross of Palm Beach County, Pundits of Palm Beach, The English Speaking Union, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Philadelphia, Palm Beach Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and Palm Beach Civic Association.
