In the 2000s
2002: The National Cartoon Museum in Boca Raton closed; in 2008 the collection was moved to the Ohio State University Cartoon Library and Museum.
2003: The Florida Philharmonic Orchestra closed.
2003: Palm Beach Dramaworks, a professional theatre company, opened in downtown West Palm Beach in the Cuillo Centre for the Arts.
2003: The Norton Gallery of Art completed a two-year expansion that added the 45,000-square-foot Gail and Melvin Nessel Wing and increased the total gallery space by 75%.
2004: Marshall Turkin founded the Boca Raton Symphonia. The chamber orchestra’s first season ended with a free concert in Mizner Park, where attendance set a record for attendance at a cultural event in Boca Raton.
2004: The $83-million, 350,000-square-foot Palm Beach County Convention Center opened across from CityPlace in West Palm Beach.
2004: The Loxahatchee River Historical Museum received substantial damage from hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. The museum operated from makeshift offices for over a year during restoration of the World War II Naval Housing (Barracks) Building on the grounds of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. The facility reopened as the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, delayed slightly due to Hurricane Wilma in October 2005.
2004: After raising $6.5 million, the not-for-profit Palm Beach Playhouse, Inc. renovated the former Jupiter Theatre and renamed it the Maltz Jupiter Theatre for benefactors Milton and Tamar Maltz. In 2005 the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Institute was established to provide young people with arts education and experiences in several ways.
2004: Three local artists collected input from over 500 visual, performing, media, and literary artists about their artistic needs. The result was a countywide association for individual artists, later named Artists of Palm Beach County. In 2008 the Palm Beach County Cultural Council held the first annual Artavox event to celebrate local artists.
2008: The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum opened in the restored 1916 Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach and welcomed 15,665 visitors in its first year.
2008: Approximately 120 acres surrounding the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was designated by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush as the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA), one of only three in the United States. JILONA is one of the most important natural, archaeological , and historic sites in Palm Beach County.
2011: Palm Beach Dramaworks renovates and renames the Cuillo Centre for the Arts the Donald and Ann Brown Theatre. The building was named in honor of Donald and Ann Brown for their donation of $2 million to Palm Beach Dramaworks.
