The Research Department of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County is dedicated to ensuring accessibility to our vast collection, consisting of over four million photographs, hundreds of postcards, architectural drawings, manuscripts, diaries, maps, and artifacts, for researchers, students, academics, and the general public alike. Acquired since 1937, our collection encompasses materials spanning centuries of Palm Beach County and Florida's history, providing a valuable resource for anyone eager to explore and understand the region's rich heritage.

    When you submit a research request to the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, our dedicated staff will promptly evaluate your inquiry. Through a preliminary search of our extensive archives, we will endeavor to determine the availability of relevant materials related to your subject of interest. If substantial resources are found, let’s schedule a research appointment in our Reading Room to explore the materials further. Rest assured, we are committed to providing comprehensive support and guidance throughout your research journey.

    Research appointments at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. To ensure a conducive research environment, only one person is permitted to conduct research in the Reading Room at a time. You are welcome to bring your laptop computers; however, please be prepared to use battery backup in case outlets are unavailable. Please note that the Reading Room is closed for research from July 1 through Labor Day each year. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to assisting you with your research needs during our available appointment times.

    For members of the Historical Society, research appointments are complimentary, and materials fees are adjusted based on membership level. Non-members are subject to a fee of $20 per hour for research appointments. Should you be unable to visit in person or require expedited research services, our staff and/or volunteers are available to conduct research, compile reports, or copy materials for a fee ranging from $100 to $150 per hour. Photocopies of items in good condition can be made at a rate of $0.25 per sheet for black and white copies and $0.50 per sheet for color copies, with additional fees for larger sizes. Mailing fees will be applied when necessary. Payment arrangements must be made in advance for all services. Should you wish to become a member of the Historical Society, memberships can be purchased during your appointment. We strive to provide accessible and comprehensive research services to all our patrons.

    To purchase photographic images from the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, you can acquire hi-resolution digital reproductions tailored to your personal, display, publication, or advertising requirements. Whether you’ve spotted an image on our social media, in the Museum, or on our website, our Research Room is equipped to assist you. For detailed information regarding the costs associated with obtaining and licensing images, we encourage you to review our price sheet available on our website or contact our Research Director directly. We are dedicated to providing you with the images you need to complement your projects and endeavors.

    Yes. The type of use must be specified on the Society’s Application for Permission form (click to download). Conditions governing use are specified in the contractual agreement, which must be signed by the user and a representative of the Historical Society. Please review the form for related fees and restrictions.
